  John Callahan Hale

  Member

  Attorney John C. Hale, a principal of the firm, has been in practice since 1979. He has practiced exclusively in the Northern Virginia area, primarily in Fairfax County and the City of Fairfax, initially with a broad practice including general civil and criminal trial work, personal injury, business, estate planning, and real estate. Since the early 1980s, however, his practice has been focused in the areas of business formations and acquisitions, business related issues, and estates and trusts. John became a member of the firm in 1980, the year the firm was formed, and became managing partner in 1990. He left that position with the firm in 2005 in order to devote more time and attention to the practice of law. Over the years, John’s practice has been concentrated in the areas of estates and trust and general business. John possesses the knowledge and expertise to handle complex estate planning, including the preparation and implementation of sophisticated techniques and vehicles designed to reduce the burden of transfer taxes. With extensive experience in these areas of over 25 years, many of his clients consist of closely held businesses and individual families in the community, in addition to non-profit organizations. John is also able to advise a variety of business entities, from formation to merger and acquisition. John is also active in his community, serving on the Advisory Board of Potomac Bank since its inception, and with the Rotary Club of Fairfax. He also serves with a number of charitable, religious and community service organizations. In the past he has served with the Fairfax Inter-service Club Council and the Fairfax Jaycees.   Jean Galloway Ball is a partner at HALE BALL MURPHY, PLC who for the past twenty-nine years has focused her practice on life-care and estate planning for all ages, elder law, special needs planning and trusts for disabled adults, guardianship/conservator proceedings, probate, trust administration and related fiduciary litigation, including contested guardianships, protection of vulnerable adults from financial exploitation, will and trust contests, requests for accountings from agents and trustees, and elective share claims. Ms. Ball is certified in Elder Law by the National Elder Law Foundation This certification is predicated on demonstrated knowledge and experience in numerous areas of law relevant to senior citizens and disabled persons. She Chairs the Steering Committee for the Council of Advanced Practitioners (CAP) of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) and is a member of the Academy of Special Needs Planners. She has been elected a Fellow of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys. She is a past two-term President of the Virginia Academy of Elder Law Attorney. Ms. Ball has been AV rated by Martindale-Hubbell for over twenty years, since 2000. She has been named a “Super Lawyer” in the field of elder law every year since 2007. She was named Lawyer of the Year for the Washington, D.C. area in elder law for 2020 by Best Lawyers.   Attorney Dana J. Carlson, a principal in the firm, has been in practice since 1981. Mr. Carlson joined the firm as an Associate after completing law school, became a member in, and has remained with the firm throughout his 39-year legal career. His current practice is comprised primarily of equitable distribution, spousal and child support, and custody cases. He has litigated throughout his career in all Northern Virginia courts including the Court of Appeals of Virginia and the Supreme Court of Virginia. Attorney Carlson addresses his client’s needs from the perspective of assessing alternative means for dispute resolution, referring clients for personal financial planning and tax advice as well as directing clients, if needed, to a variety of outside quality counseling resources. Attorney Carlson is actively involved in community service organizations, bar activities, and religious activities.   Loretta Morris Williams is a partner in the firm who focuses her practice on estate planning, elder law, special needs planning/special needs trusts, and trust and estate administration. She works with adults of all ages and parents planning for children with special needs. Ms. Williams advises clients on planning for long-term care and Medicaid eligibility, and handles guardianship cases for adults of all ages. Ms. Williams is certified in elder law by the National Elder Law Foundation. Prior to attending law school, Ms. Williams worked on Medicaid, disability and aging issues for non-profit organizations, including the National Association of State Units on Aging, the State Medicaid Directors Association, and the March of Dimes.   Kimberley Ann Murphy, Esq., has been a partner and principal attorney of the law firm of HALE BALL MURPHY, PLC Carlson Baumgartner Murphy, PLC, in Fairfax, Virginia, since 2005. She had been an Associate with the firm since being admitted to the Virginia State Bar in October 2000. Attorney Murphy concentrates her practice in the areas of Elder Law (contested guardianships), Estates and Trusts Litigation, and Business/Civil litigation. She has appeared on numerous occasions before many circuit courts throughout the Commonwealth, in addition to the Court of Appeals of Virginia and the Supreme Court of Virginia, as well as the Virginia Department of Health Professions and Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control. In 2007, Attorney Murphy was admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States.   Attorney Samantha Simmons Fredieu is a partner at HALE BALL MURPHY, PLC. Ms. Fredieu focuses the majority of her practice on fiduciary litigation, guardianships and conservatorships, estate administration, and estate and special needs planning. Ms. Fredieu is also a certified guardian ad litem for incapacitated adults. Ms. Fredieu graduated magna cum laude from Vermont Law School where she was the symposium editor on the Vermont Law Review, a production editor on the Vermont Journal of Environmental Law, and a member of the Moot Court Advisory Board. She has clerked for both the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the civil division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office E.D.V.A. in Alexandria. After law school Ms. Fredieu completed a two-year clerkship with Chief Judge Dennis J. Smith of the Fairfax County Circuit Court. Prior to joining HALE BALL MURPHY, PLC, Mr. Boring was the senior partner in the law firm of Boring & Pilger, P.C., Vienna VA.   Attorney Lisa M. Campo is a Partner at HALE BALL MURPHY, PLC. Ms. Campo has been with the firm since 2007 as a legal assistant before attending law school and as a law clerk during law school. After passing the Virginia bar, Ms. Campo continued with the firm as an associate attorney. Ms. Campo graduated from University of Baltimore School of Law in Baltimore, Maryland. During law school, Ms. Campo was a member of the Robert F. Wagner National Labor & Employment Law Moot Court team and competed in the national competition held at New York Law School. Ms. Campo concentrates her practice in the areas of trust and estate litigation, fiduciary litigation, contested guardianships and conservatorships, business litigation, civil litigation and probate. She has appeared numerous times before many circuit courts throughout Virginia and has participated in appeals before the Court of Appeals of Virginia and the Supreme Court of Virginia.   Justin B. Berger is an associate attorney with HALE BALL MURPHY, PLC with the litigation group. Prior to joining HALE BALL MURPHY, PLC, Mr. Berger was part of the litigation and bankruptcy practice groups for at an established northern Virginia law firm. Mr. Berger has also served also general counsel to an educational institute focusing on international trade finance, financial crimes, and commercial fraud. Mr. Berger graduated from George Mason University School of Law where he served as an Associate Editor on the Journal of International Commercial Law.
